However, recent times have seen a disturbing trend sweeping across various regions: the decay of local government infrastructure.
• The situation is hauntingly ubiquitous and threatens to undermine the essence of local governance. The issue seems to be less about the infrastructure that’s absent and more about the existing ones becoming decrepit, dilapidated, and hazardous due to a distinct lack of maintenance and rehabilitation.
• Several reasons contribute to this unchecked trend of infrastructure disrepair. Firstly, limited budgets and undue bureaucracy often handicap local governments, thwarting their efforts to implement robust preventive maintenance strategies and infrastructure rehabilitation. Given the significantly high upgrade costs, many are forced to operate within the constraints of their financial bandwidth.
